JPMorgan whistleblower gets $63.9 million in mortgage fraud deal

Finally, A whistle blower who lived to tell about it.

By Jonathan Stempel

Fri Mar 7, 2014 3:48pm EST

(Reuters) – A whistleblower will be paid $63.9 million for providing tips that led to JPMorgan Chase & Co’s agreement to pay $614 million and tighten oversight to resolve charges that it defrauded the government into insuring flawed home loans.

The payment to the whistleblower, Keith Edwards, was disclosed on Friday in a filing with the U.S. district court in Manhattan that formally ended the case.

In the February 4 settlement, JPMorgan admitted that for more than a decade it submitted thousands of mortgages for insurance by the Federal Housing Administration or the Department of Veterans Affairs that did not qualify for government guarantees.

JPMorgan also admitted that it had failed to tell the agencies that its own internal reviews had turned up problems.

The government said it ultimately had to cover millions of dollars of losses after some of the bank’s loans went sour, resulting in evictions and foreclosures nationwide.

“There were a lot of bad loans made during the financial boom, and the United States taxpayer was left holding the bag through the VA and FHA loan programs,” Edwards’ lawyer, David Wasinger, said in a phone interview. “Hopefully the settlement sends a message to Wall Street that this conduct is not allowed, and that in the future it will be held accountable.”

Edwards could not immediately be reached for comment.

About $56.5 million of Edwards’ award concerns the FHA portion of the case, and $7.4 million concerns the VA portion.

Wasinger declined to discuss his legal fees.

Edwards, a Louisiana resident, had worked for JPMorgan or its predecessors from 2003 to 2008, and had been an assistant vice president supervising a government insuring unit.

He originally sued in January 2013 under the federal False Claims Act, which lets individuals sue government contractors and suppliers for allegedly defrauding taxpayers. The U.S. Department of Justice later joined as a plaintiff.

Whistleblowers can recover portions of False Claims Act settlements, which often grow if the government gets involved.

Wasinger also represented Edward O’Donnell, whose tips led to an October 2013 jury finding that Bank of America Corp was liable for fraud over defective mortgages sold by its Countrywide unit. The government is seeking $2.1 billion of penalties in that case.

Citigroup Inc, Deutsche Bank AG and Flagstar Bancorp Inc were among lenders that settled False Claims Act mortgage cases in recent years.

The Justice Department in December said it had paid out roughly $1.98 billion of whistleblower awards from 2009 to 2013.

The case is U.S. ex rel. Edwards v. JPMorgan Chase Bank NA et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 13-00220.

What is Greenwald Covering Up?

Got this email from Forbidden Knowledge TV, take a look, what do you think?

Dear Andy,

This second pilot edition of Boiling Frogs
Post Roundtable expands on the background
information discussed in a short clip by
James Corbett which I sent earlier this
week.
Sibel Edmonds is a former FBI translator
who was fired in March 2002, after accusing
the FBI of deliberately suppressing and
endangering national security, which later
gained her awards and fame as a whistleblower.
Edmonds testified before the 9/11 Commission,
but her testimony was excluded from the
official 9/11 Commission Report.
She is the founder of the National Security
Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC) and Editor
of her website, BoilingFrogsPost.com, where
she has recently raised questions about the
extremely slow release of the Snowden
documents.
Corbett, along with Sibel Edmonds and
Guillermo Jimenez discuss the controversy
surrounding the $250 million dollar media
venture between Glenn Greenwald and eBay
Chairman, Pierre Omidyar. PayPal, a
subsidiary of eBay has vocally supported
and materially enabled illegal NSA activities.
They discuss the glacial pace at which the
Snowden documents are being released, in
the name of mutli-million-dollar profits and
Edmonds is still waiting for a response to an
open letter to Snowden, as to whether he
condones the manner with which the
documents he obtained at the risk of his own
life have been handled (if, indeed his story is
all that it has been purported to be, of which
she has expressed some doubt) and whether
he is receiving his fair “cut” from these
astronomical deals.
For this, Edmonds, a longtime supporter of
Greenwald’s crusade against the lapdog,
propagandist and criminal mainstream media
has found herself savaged by extremely
unseemly tweets from Greenwald, and his
emailed response to her perfectly reasonable
questions were, quote: “Go away, bitch!”
Greenwald’s reactions demonstrate a complete
breaking from rank among dissident journalists
and whistleblowers – besides demonstrating
immense misogyny. Greenwald’s unwarranted
and absurd assaults against Edmonds truly beg
askance as to his ultimate motivations.
At this juncture, it sure looks, walks and talks
like an NSA buy-out of the data dump – probably
the most legally prudent option for Greenwald –
lest he become another Julian Assange or
Chelsea Manning.
The Snowden documents are considered by
the US to be stolen Government Property.
Constitutional Law would argue that this
property was, in turn illegally stolen from
the People of the US – who unwittingly
funded the NSA’s illegal activities, therefore,
it legally belongs to the American People.
As a Constitutional Lawyer, I’m sure
Greenwald has studied the situation and
become convinced that this illegally-acquired
cache is salable. But if this $250 million dollar
Omidyar deal actually represents an NSA
buy-out and a blockade of the information
obtained, on pain of death by a recipient of
the Sam Adams Award for integrity and
ethics by the intelligence community; if it
is a betrayal of Ed Snowden’s alleged
intentions and his sacrifice, that will feltch
beyond human comprehension. We’re
watching and waiting…tapping our little
toes, over here, Mr. Greenwald.

Kicking out the Federal Reserve and Issuing Dollars Backed by Gold in Secret Vault of Bank of Hawaii

Dear Louis,

I am copying Elaine Colville, a Scottish whistleblower.  I am sure that Elaine has left no stone unturned.  In the meantime, this is also to update the rest of the World Bank whistleblowers (blind copied) and my facebook friends where things stand.

Best, Karen

Message Body: Hi Ms Hudes

I think it’s amazing what you and your whistle blower friends are doing. I’ve watched a couple of your interviews on YouTube and understand that the UK parliament ignored your complaints? I’m not sure if you may or maybe not have done this already, but have you ever considered sending your information to the Scottish government? They are both connected. Maybe Westminster will pay attention then. They are always calling them out for something. It’s worth a try.

Louis.

I just learned of your 2011 letter to the US Forest Service.   I worked in the World Bank Legal Department for 20 years, and have been fighting the corruption in the US Federal Government along with other whistleblowers.  The corruption is about to end, as US allies who want to put the groups responsible for this corruption back in their place are now in a coalition with the Council of Governors and the Department of Defense.

The Jesuits have been responsible for this corruption, and were working with corrupt families to try and dominate the place.  Their efforts failed miserably, and now it is time for the United States to be a real beacon of light to the nations.

The first thing for us to do is to kick the Federal Reserve out, and then to issue dollars backed by the gold that is on secret deposit in the Bank of Hawaii.  The legal signatory to the gold in the vault is ready to sign the papers.

I would appreciate your helping me to get our local governments and state governments on board. I am in touch with the Council of Governors and the County Executives of America (its President, Ike Leggett, is the County Executive for Montgomery County, Maryland).  I have also contacted the Sheriffs for Montgomery County and Frederick County, Maryland.

Best,

Karen Hudes

In the United States of America, citizens have the right to consent to our government. We have withdrawn this consent since 1929, when the Federal Reserve grabbed Yellowstone, the rest of our state parks, converted future earnings of our citizens into bonds for investment in the capital markets, gave our tax dollars to the UK and the Vatican, and turned our federal courts into Maritime courts. Congress is required to convene a Constitutional Convention under Article V of the Constitution. The US Congress may not refuse to call a Constitutional Convention. http://foa5c.org/file.php/1/Amendments/071_cg_r_03369_1929_HL.JPG
US dollars do not have to crash. Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa finance their international trade with offsets and gold. Chase is refusing to transfer money out of the United States.  http://www.naturalnews.com/042529_Chase_bank_capital_controls_financial_red_alert.html
We can back our dollars, issued by the Treasury, with precious metals and other assets. The world’s gold is in trust for the benefit of humanity and can prevent an economic crash. http://www.naaij.org/2013/10/12/the-greatest-heist-in-history-the-jesuits-bankers-hid-the-worlds-treasure/
The Federal Government must respect the rule of law of the land. The Sheriffs, County Executives, and the Council of Governors are assisting the World Bank whistleblowers in enforcing the law of the land
